Laser Spine Surgery is a Safe and Effective Treatment for Neck or Back Pain

Laser Spine Surgery is a Safe and Effective Treatment for Neck or Back Pain

Laser spine surgery, like what’s offered at Laser Spine Institute, is becoming a more popular treatment in the world of neck and back pain as people become more aware of it. And there are plenty of reasons why. This type of procedure has many advantages over traditional open-back surgery, not least of which is its superior effectiveness. More than 85% of LSI’s patients report that they feel relief from their symptoms within three months of surgery. Traditional surgery is only effective for about 60% of patients. Beyond that, the minimally invasive nature of laser spine surgery also makes it safer by reducing the likelihood of infection and other complications.

Here’s how it works:

  • You visit one of LSI’s outpatient surgery clinics where your condition is diagnosed and a procedure is selected to treat it.
  • A complete medical evaluation is performed to insure your body can handle surgery.
  • An IV sedative is administered, and the location on your back or neck slated for surgery is numbed with a local anesthesia.
  • A small incision is made in the back or neck and a small tube is inserted. The tube is used to access the spinal surgery site.
  • To get to the spine the surgeon gently pushes aside muscle and other tissue with the tube. Next a series of nesting tubes is slide over the first to gently increase the size of the opening. All of the tubes are removed except for the largest.
  • The surgeon feeds small tools and a camera through the tube to the surgery site.
  • The laser spine surgery is conducted.
  • The tube and tools are removed and the incision is closed.

After the surgery the patient visits our center twice more on consecutive days for post-operative check-ups and physical therapy. It generally takes them about two weeks to return to their normal activities.
